Flag Day Donation

Flag Day Donation

A very belated presentation has been made by the Iron Trust (holidays, illness and shift availability got in the way!).  The £155 raised by the Flag Day raffle was presented by Trust Chairman Tony Gosling to Gill Ayre, (Chair of the local Macmillan Cancer Care group), and Josie Lees.

Gill said “Thanks to all fans who supported the raffle and made this donation possible.  The money will go towards the support of people in the local area who are living with cancer.  From speaking with those people I know they really appreciate the help that they get from Macmillan.”  Gill also gave us some details about Macmillan cancer care in our area.

Today, around 3m people are living with cancer in the UK, and by 2030 this figure will rise to 4m. Half of the population will get cancer at some point in our lives.  However, people are now living longer with a cancer diagnosis. Through better treatment we have added ‘years to life’ but now we need to add ‘life to years’.

Consequently donations to Macmillan are increasingly important

  • £32 could pay for a Macmillan nurse for 1 hour, helping people living with cancer and their families receive essential medical, practical and emotional support.
  • £27 could pay for 100 copies of the cancer guide. This Macmillan booklet can help someone recently diagnosed with cancer and their families, understand more about cancer, its treatment, and the help available.

The Scunthorpe Macmillan information centre officially was opened in October 2013 by the Countess of Halifax.  The centre provides people affected by cancer with the chance to ask questions and talk through their concerns with specialist staff and trained volunteers.  The centre provides booklets and leaflets about cancer and information on financial support and a wide variety of other topics.

In 2021/2 Macmillan in North Lincolnshire has so far given £20,450 given to 102 people.  This has been used to provide help with clothing,  heating costs, fares for hospital visits, wheelchairs / mobility scooters and  bedding / beds / chairs.

Again many thanks for your support for our Flag Day raffle.
